Dr. Fatma Al-Jasmi, MBBS, FRCPC

Brief Biography
Dr. Al –Jasmi completed a paediatric residency and is currently completing the last year of a fellowship at SickKids.  She graduated from United Arab Emirates University, where she is now an Assistant Professor in the Department of Paediatrics.

 

Dr. Fathia Al-Murshedi, MD, FRCP

Brief Biography
Dr. Al-Murshedi received her medical degree from Sultan Qaboos University in 1999 and finished residency training in clinical genetics in June 2007.  Currently, she is a clinical fellow at SickKids and is completing a master’s degree in molecular biology.

 

Dr. Upton Allen, MBBS, MSc, FAAP, FRCPC

Brief Biography
Dr. Allen’s clinical and research activities focus on immunocompromised patients with a wide spectrum of infectious diseases.  In particular, he investigates the various problems that results from infectious diseases in transplant recipients and studies transplant-related vaccines.  A major focus has been the herpes family of viruses, including Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and related infections.

 

Dr. John Callahan, PhD

Brief Biography
Dr. Callahan’s research activities focus on enzyme structure and function, gene therapy and lysosomal storage diseases.  He has placed particular emphasis on glycohydrolases and the impact of missense mutations on their structure and function as well as the neurochemical aspects of storage diseases, particularly gangliosides and other sphingolipids.

Brief Biography
Dr. Clarke is former Head of the Division of Clinical and Metabolic Genetics and the Former Director of the Genetic Metabolic Diseases Program at SickKids.  He currently chairs the Ontario Advisory Committee on Newborn and Childhood Screening as well as the Ontario Advisory Committee on the Treatment of Gaucher Disease.  His research interests include lysosomal storage diseases and he has been principal investigator on a number of clinical trials exploring innovative approaches to their treatment, including those for Fabry disease and GM2 gangliosidosis.  For over 35 years, he has pursued clinical research relating to the impact of treatment on children with phenylketonuria (PKU).

 

Dr. Sharon Dell, BEng, MD, FRCP (C)

Brief Biography
Dr. Dell joined SickKids in 2002. Her main clinical and research interest is in childhood asthma. She is currently the principal investigator on the T-CHEQ study, a large epidemiological study investigating the effects of traffic related air pollution on respiratory outcomes in young schoolchildren.

 

Dr. Daniel Gorman, MD, FRCPC
Psychiatrist, Division of Psychiatry, SickKids
Project Investigator, SickKids Research Institute

Brief Biography
Dr. Gorman joined SickKids in 2005. His clinical and research interests focus on Tourette syndrome (TS) and associated disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Among his current projects is a study of psychosocial outcomes and perinatal risk factors in children with TS or OCD.

 

Dr. Suneeta Monga, MD, FRCPC

Brief Biography
Dr. Monga joined SickKids in August 1999. Her clinical and research interests are in the area of anxiety disorders in young children and the use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as a treatment modality for anxious children.   She was involved in the development of SCARED, a self-report instrument for identifying anxiety in children.

 

Dr. Indra Narang, BMEDSCI, MBBCH, FRCPCH, MD

Brief Biography
Dr. Narang joined SickKids in 2007. Her clinical and research interests include sleep-disordered breathing in different disease states. She is currently investigating the effect of obstructive sleep apnea in patients with heart disease.

 

Dr. Stanley Read, MD, PhD, FRCPC

Brief Biography
Dr. Read was Head of the Division of lnfectious Diseases at SickKids until 2003. His current research interests are in HIV/AIDS, particularly the prevention of maternal-to-child transmission, the natural history of HIV infection and the management of HIV infection in children. He is involved in research and teaching projects in the Bahamas, Russia and the Ukraine.

 

Dr. Andreas Schulze, MD, FRCPC

Brief Biography
Dr. Schulze is an expert in paediatric metabolic genetics, with experience in the diagnosis, counselling and treatment of patients with inherited metabolic diseases, and has a particular interest in newborn screening. He worked to establish the newborn screening program for the State of Qatar, implemented an expanded newborn screening program in Germany and is Vice-President of the German Neonatal Screening Society. His current research is focused on creatine deficiency syndromes and encompasses the pathophysiology of these diseases, improving timely diagnosis of effected individuals and designing novel treatment strategies.
